One of my favourite yearly entomological events is coming up soon, and I wanted to spread the word to all those who may be interested in attending. The Entomological Society of Ontario Annual General Meeting is being held October 15-17 in Grand Bend, Ontario, and it promises to be another great meeting.

Featuring plenary talks on forensic entomology and the genetics of behaviour, as well as the always excellent student poster and presentation competitions, this year’s meeting is shaping up to be a great weekend of insect science. The destination style meeting presents a golden opportunity for meeting potential academic advisors and industry professionals in a relaxed setting. The President’s Prize student competition features a cash prize for both the best oral presentation and best poster, and highlights the groundbreaking research being done around the province.

Registration for the meeting includes your food for most of the weekend (including the Saturday evening banquet where everyone always has a good time), and travel awards are available to both graduate and undergraduate students. Reduced room rates are available at the resort hosting the conference if booked before September 15, and Pinery Provincial Park is only 10 minutes away if you’d prefer to spend the weekend camping and collecting in oak savannah and sand dunes.

The deadline for paper and poster submission, as well as a reduced registration fee, is September 15 2010. Check out the official ESO AGM website for more information including costs, forms, and location details.

If you live in or near Ontario (or feel like exploring what this part of Canada has to share) and are interested in insects, I highly recommend making the trip to Grand Bend this October! I hope to see you there!

  1. Hey how many of the Marshall lab people are going?

  2. I’m not too sure Miles, but I would guess we’ll pull some pretty good numbers like usual!

  3. Mmm I asked Andrew but he never got back to me, is there a chance that I can share a room with someone? Shorthouse is going with his wife, and the other two that are going are both girls…so that just leaves me. I’d rather share a room with someone I know than a complete stranger:p

  4. I’m not sure what everyone else is thinking, but I’m probably going to lobby to camp at the Pinery ($40/night vs. $140/night – split 8 ways is $5/night vs $20+/night) and you’re more than welcome to join us! Let me know whether you’re in, and we’ll keep space for you.

  5. Oh wow I’d totally do camping! Will just have run it by Shorthouse by I don’t see it being a problem:)

  6. Sounds so interesting! Pinery is an amazing place! Worth visiting. Is it open to amateurs as well?

  7. Pinery is a great place Ani! The meeting is definitely open to amateurs, and if you’re a student or recently graduated then you can join the ESO for free and get the student registration rate. I hope you can make it, it’ll be a great weekend!
