Although we had a good time carving our various insects<\/a> Thursday night, we still had to come up with a new pumpkin design for our department’s contest Friday afternoon. With a pumpkin supplied by the graduate student council and 2 hours to carve our winning design, the pressure was on to uphold our title as pumpkin champions! After a strategy session over coffee, we decided to bee proactive and get busy.<\/p>\n

With 8-10 students eager to help, we needed a design which would allow as many people as possible to help. By using a tin template and carving out individual cells, everyone had a job to do sculpting the life stages of the European Honeybee (Apis mellifera<\/em>).<\/p>\n

With each life stage carefully sculpted, and auxillary cells full of nourishing honey, our pumpkin successfully defended our title in the Lab Themed category for another year!<\/p>\n

That rounds up the insect carvings for this year. Thanks to everyone who helped brainstorm ideas and carve out our ideas!<\/p>\n
