{"id":3187,"date":"2014-11-25T15:41:09","date_gmt":"2014-11-25T20:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/?p=3187"},"modified":"2014-11-25T15:41:09","modified_gmt":"2014-11-25T20:41:09","slug":"jurassic-world-job-ad-entomologist-wanted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/25\/jurassic-world-job-ad-entomologist-wanted\/","title":{"rendered":"Jurassic World Job Ad: Entomologist Wanted"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The trailer for Jurassic World, the latest instalment in the Jurassic Park franchise, was released today, and well&#8230; see for yourself.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"695\" height=\"391\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RFinNxS5KN4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While scientists have apparently figured out how to genetically modify dinosaurs (which I thought was the entire premise of the original when they spliced frog DNA into ancient\u00a0Dino DNA, but whatever, GM-OH NOES!), they <a href=\"https:\/\/cameronwebb.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/31\/dinosaurs-dna-mosquitoes-and-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\">still haven&#8217;t hired an entomologist<\/a> to tell them which amber inclusions are mosquitoes (family Culicidae), and which are crane flies (family Tipulidae).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3188\" style=\"width: 705px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Jurassic-World-Trailer-Screen-shot-Tipulidae-in-amber.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3188\" class=\"wp-image-3188 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Jurassic-World-Trailer-Screen-shot-Tipulidae-in-amber-700x603.png\" alt=\"Oops.\" width=\"695\" height=\"598\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Jurassic-World-Trailer-Screen-shot-Tipulidae-in-amber-700x603.png 700w, http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Jurassic-World-Trailer-Screen-shot-Tipulidae-in-amber-500x431.png 500w, http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Jurassic-World-Trailer-Screen-shot-Tipulidae-in-amber-300x258.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 695px) 100vw, 695px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oops.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>No big deal though, crane flies and mosquitoes are close enough, right? Well, actually they&#8217;re about as closely related to one another as\u00a0velociraptors\u00a0are to sea turtles (and only a little\u00a0more closely related than humans are to\u00a0<em>Tyrannosaurus rex<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>I think we can all agree that Jurassic World would have a much different mood\u00a0if it climaxed with\u00a0this<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/38.media.tumblr.com\/b9aa5b311c3af8eaa5230038d902f55c\/tumblr_mysfxyVEaA1s7y8efo3_400.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/38.media.tumblr.com\/b9aa5b311c3af8eaa5230038d902f55c\/tumblr_mysfxyVEaA1s7y8efo3_400.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>than it does with\u00a0this<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.makeagif.com\/media\/11-25-2014\/WOvgu2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So for all you Hollywood producers out there looking for an entomology consultant to save you from embarrassing oversights, have your people call my people; we can fix this. But in the meantime, save me a seat when Jurassic World hits theatres.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>P.S. About that\u00a0Mosasaur.\u00a0While we know marine mammals like killer whales can be bitten by mosquitoes (a <a href=\"http:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/17\/8\/10-1979_article\" target=\"_blank\">captive killer whale in San Antonio contracted and later died of West Nile Virus back in 2007<\/a>), the odds of a mosquito biting a wild mosasaur in the ocean, and then flying, fully leaden with blood, back to shore, only to be immediately entombed in sap running down a tree trunk and preserved for a few million years as an amber inclusion, are a bit of a stretch.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a chance I may be overthinking this.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The trailer for Jurassic World, the latest instalment in the Jurassic Park franchise, was released today, and well&#8230; see for yourself.
