{"id":2952,"date":"2013-11-06T10:28:33","date_gmt":"2013-11-06T15:28:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/?p=2952"},"modified":"2013-11-06T10:28:34","modified_gmt":"2013-11-06T15:28:34","slug":"ants-spiders-or-wishful-thinking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/06\/ants-spiders-or-wishful-thinking\/","title":{"rendered":"Ants, spiders, or wishful thinking?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>There&#8217;s a pretty remarkable fly photograph making the rounds of social media today, and while it originally had me going &#8220;Oooooh!&#8221;, the more I think about it, the more I feel like we&#8217;re staring at clouds.<\/p>\n<p>It started when <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ziyatong\/status\/397348948857196544\" target=\"_blank\">Ziya Tong tweeted a photo of a <em>Goniurellia tridens<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(a fruit fly in the family Tephritidae) displaying its wings:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" width=\"550\">\n<p>Goniurellia tridens is a 3-in-1 insect&#10;&#10;[photo: Peter Roosenschoon] <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/i8ThAOkrvN\">pic.twitter.com\/i8ThAOkrvN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ziya Tong (@ziyatong) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ziyatong\/statuses\/397348948857196544\">November 4, 2013<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Do the wing patterns look a bit like ants to you? The photo has since been picked up by a number of high profile sites, like the <a href=\"http:\/\/dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/11\/04\/survival-of-the-extraordinary-a-fly-with-ants-on-its-wings\/?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times Dot Earth Blog<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com\/2013\/11\/05\/fly-with-ant-mimic-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\">Why Evolution is True<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itsokaytobesmart.com\/post\/66106817505\/fly-ant-wing-decoy\" target=\"_blank\">It&#8217;s Okay To Be Smart<\/a>\u00a0because, hey, it looks like this fly brings friends with it where ever it goes. I&#8217;m all for flies getting some positive exposure &amp; attention, but the more I look at this fly and think about its relatives &amp; evolutionary history, the more I think we&#8217;re all reading too much into that pattern.<\/p>\n<p>This stellate (star-like) wing pattern is very common among flies in the Tephritinae, the subfamily of fruit flies this species belongs to, although the specifics differ between species and genera. Here are the wing patterns of the other <i>Goniurellia<\/i> species (found across the Mediterranean, Middle East, Africa and Asia).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/06\/ants-spiders-or-wishful-thinking\/goniurellia-wings-freidberg-1980\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2960\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2960\" alt=\"Goniurellia wings Freidberg 1980\" src=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Goniurellia-wings-Freidberg-1980.jpg\" width=\"651\" height=\"607\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Goniurellia-wings-Freidberg-1980.jpg 651w, http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Goniurellia-wings-Freidberg-1980-500x466.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Goniurellia-wings-Freidberg-1980-300x279.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 651px) 100vw, 651px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to think that species in far away places like the Middle East and Africa have special, exotic adaptations, but in fact we have equally cool species in our own backyards. If you look closely at some of the species nearby, you can see this general wing pattern is conserved in other tephritine genera, like\u00a0<em>Trupanea<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Euarestoides<\/em>, just without the darker &#8220;eyespot&#8221; (technically called a bulla, a dark, blister-like bubble of the wing membrane, which can be found in other local-but-less-ant-like wing patterns, such as <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biology.ualberta.ca\/bsc\/ejournal\/jmhn_15\/teph99.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Euaresta bella<\/a><\/em>&#8216;s).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biology.ualberta.ca\/bsc\/ejournal\/jmhn_15\/teph213.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.biology.ualberta.ca\/bsc\/ejournal\/jmhn_15\/Galleries\/TephritidaeWingPlates\/wingalbum\/slides\/wing_trupanea-actinobola.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trupanea actinobola<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biology.ualberta.ca\/bsc\/ejournal\/jmhn_15\/teph103.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.biology.ualberta.ca\/bsc\/ejournal\/jmhn_15\/Galleries\/TephritidaeWingPlates\/wingalbum\/slides\/wing_euarestoides-abstersus.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"316\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Euarestoides abstersus<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Another theory that&#8217;s been circulating is that rather than ants, the wing patterns may be representations of jumping spiders. Again, there&#8217;s some precedence for this, as several <em>Rhagoletis<\/em>\u00a0&amp; <em>Zonosemata<\/em> species\u00a0(which are fruit crop pests, and thus more heavily studied) have been shown to <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/compound-eye\/2012\/02\/23\/the-fly-that-banks-on-arachno\" target=\"_blank\">hold their wings in such a way as to give them the appearance of an 8-legged threat<\/a>.\u00a0But these flies put on a grand charade, <a href=\"http:\/\/whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com\/2013\/03\/20\/moar-mimicry-moth-mimics-spider-and-other-cool-stuff\/\" target=\"_blank\">using their entire bodies to fool predators into backing down<\/a>, not just the tips of their wings. Additionally, the spider mimicking flies are in a totally different subfamily, and while the higher relationships of Tephritidae are still being figured out, as far as I can tell no one has ever suggested spider-mimicking wings are an ancestral state shared by both subfamilies, and would therefore argue there&#8217;s not a strong evolutionary link. Take a look at this\u00a0<em>Trupanea actinobola<\/em> photo by Steve Marshall showing how the wings look when not in use.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biology.ualberta.ca\/bsc\/ejournal\/jmhn_15\/teph213.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.biology.ualberta.ca\/bsc\/ejournal\/jmhn_15\/Galleries\/TephritidaeLivePhotos\/livealbum\/slides\/live_Trupanea-actinobola.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"441\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trupanea actinobola<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When the two patterns are put together, the &#8220;ants&#8221; would be standing on top of the other&#8217;s feet, which isn&#8217;t exactly the most natural behaviour for an ant. It&#8217;s possible that the wing patterns together are serving as a false-head (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BioInFocus\/status\/397850478069182464\" target=\"_blank\">as suggested to me<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bugmanjones\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Jones<\/a> on Twitter), and thus tricking predators into attacking the wing tips first (which would still be bad for the fly&#8217;s ability to fly) or into attacking the false-head from &#8220;behind&#8221;, thus putting them squarely in front of the true head and easily watched and avoided by the fly. This strikes me as a pretty reasonable argument, but why might there be so much variation in wing patterns if species are using them as a false head?<\/p>\n<p>Another factor to consider is what other uses wing patterns may have besides predator avoidance. Many fruit flies, especially those within the Tephritinae, have very complex mating rituals, and will perform routines that can involve any combination of leg waving, <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/8N7Dmhn5B6w\" target=\"_blank\">body swelling<\/a> and wing waving &amp; supinating (plus many other behaviours). Of course, if these wing patterns and flag-waving behaviours are for the female&#8217;s benefit, then it would follow that they can actually see and recognize the patterns and routines. While chemical stimuli (both from host plants and aggregating flies) are generally believed to draw individuals from long ranges into close proximity, it seems that fruit flies have very strong visual acuity, and can correctly identify conspecifics based on wing patterning when presented with a choice (Headrick &amp; Goeden, 1994). This means that small changes in wing pattern can help diverging populations sort themselves out, even if host plants and other factors remain the same.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ziyatong\/status\/397348948857196544\" target=\"_blank\">viral ant-winged photo<\/a>, it would appear that the fly is supinating its wings (twisting the wing 90<sup>o<\/sup> and pressing forwards to display patterns), which can occur both when a species is pretending they&#8217;re a threatening spider as well as in species with courtship wing displays, which doesn&#8217;t help us decide what&#8217;s going on &#8212; is there a female just off camera that&#8217;s being courted, or is the fly threatened by the giant camera lens in its face? However, if you look closely at the photo you can see that the middle and hind legs are actually curled up under the body and the fore legs are not resting in a natural position at all &#8212; they look more like a ballerina en pointe, with the last leg segments curled and with the tops of the &#8220;feet&#8221; (the tarsomeres) resting on the surface of the substrate &#8212; which leads me to believe the fly in the photo may be dead, or at least heavily compromised, and not actively displaying its wings at all!<\/p>\n<p>Putting everything together, it leads me to believe we may be choosing to see ants where they don&#8217;t actually exist. Much like how we see <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davidmanly\/status\/397482141728378880\" target=\"_blank\">sharks in the clouds<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/arielknutson\/people-who-found-jesus-in-their-food\" target=\"_blank\">Jesus in our toast<\/a>\u00a0(a psychological phenomenon called <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pareidolia\" target=\"_blank\">Pareidolia<\/a>), I think we&#8217;ve become so conditioned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myrmecos.net\/2011\/08\/30\/a-mural-on-moth-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\">to expect ornate patterns on wings to be mimicking something else<\/a> that we&#8217;re forcing objects to appear everywhere, even if there&#8217;s no evolutionary or behavioural explanation for it. It&#8217;s important that we don&#8217;t let our human-centric points of view, emotions and opinions bias our interpretation of what&#8217;s really going on.
