But how does it actually infect it&#8217;s victims? First, the female scoops up some sand and dust into a special &#8220;sand chamber&#8221; at the tip of her abdomen, coating her eggs with particulate to protect it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2577\" style=\"width: 301px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/31\/a-scary-orange-boo-fly\/beeflysandchamber\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2577\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2577\" class=\" wp-image-2577  \" title=\"Bee Fly Sand Chamber\" src=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/BeeFlySandChamber.jpg\" alt=\"Female Bee Fly Sand Chamber Bombyliidae\" width=\"291\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/BeeFlySandChamber.jpg 520w, http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/BeeFlySandChamber-493x500.jpg 493w, http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/BeeFlySandChamber-296x300.jpg 296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This sand chamber allows the female to coat her eggs with dust and dirt to help protect them during delivery.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Once coated, the female deposits her eggs near where she expects the hosts to be living (some bee fly species will hover over ground nesting bee entrances and literally shoot eggs down the hole and into larval chambers).
