This individual came in while I was blacklighting at the Rouge Valley BioBlitz, right in the heart of Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>The Waved Sphinx Moth feeds on a variety of plants as a caterpillar, including ash (<em>Fraxinus<\/em>), privet (<em>Ligustrum<\/em>), oak (<em>Quercus<\/em>), hawthorn (<em>Crataegus<\/em>), and fringe (<em>Chionanthus<\/em>). and can be found across much of eastern North America throughout the summer.<\/p>\n<p>As for parasites, being big and widespread has it&#8217;s drawbacks, as this species has at least 10 species of Tachinidae known to develop in it (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/552904\" target=\"_blank\">Belvosia borealis<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nadsdiptera.org\/Tach\/Tachgallery\/Exoristinae\/Blondeliini\/Compsilura_concinnata.html\" target=\"_blank\">Compsilura concinnata<\/a>, Drino incompta, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nadsdiptera.org\/Tach\/Bertha\/chet.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Chetogena<\/a> claripennis, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nadsdiptera.org\/Tach\/Bertha\/chet.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Chetogena<\/a> floridensis, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nadsdiptera.org\/Tach\/CatNAmer\/Genera\/Hyphantrophaga.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Hyphantrophaga<\/a> hyphantriae, <em>Hyphantrophaga virilis,\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nadsdiptera.org\/Tach\/CatNAmer\/Genera\/Lespesia.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Lespesia<\/a> aletiae, <a href=\"http:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/264987\" target=\"_blank\">Lespesia<\/a> frenchii\u00a0<\/em>and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/265730\" target=\"_blank\">Winthemia<\/a> datanae<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>Moth identification and biology from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Peterson-Field-Guide-Northeastern-America\/dp\/0547238487\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1343002340&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">Peterson Field Guide to Moths<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Peterson-Field-Guide-Northeastern-America\/dp\/0547238487\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1343002340&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0of Northeastern North America<\/a>\u00a0(Beadle &amp; Leckie, 2012).<\/p>\n<p>Parasite information from <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=29-ltt3cyFEC&amp;pg=PP5#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">A Host-Parasite Catalog of North American Tachinidae Diptera<\/a> (Arnaud, 1978).<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I can&#8217;t help but get a little excited about sphinx moths; they&#8217;re so big and cool looking that I just can&#8217;t resist taking a photo (foreshadowing: expect to see more sphinx moth photos by the end of the week).
