{"id":2067,"date":"2012-05-12T18:20:18","date_gmt":"2012-05-12T22:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/?p=2067"},"modified":"2012-05-12T18:20:18","modified_gmt":"2012-05-12T22:20:18","slug":"the-weekly-flypaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/12\/the-weekly-flypaper\/","title":{"rendered":"The Weekly Flypaper"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I come across a large number of interesting blog posts, news articles, scientific papers and various other types of media every week, which I try and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/BioInFocus\" target=\"_blank\">share through Twitter<\/a> on a regular basis. Since I know not everyone has been bitten by the Twitter bug yet<sup>1<\/sup>, I figured I&#8217;d start a weekly round up of links to some of the stories I find interesting, important or just plain entertaining.<\/p>\n<p>True to form, most of these links will be insect related, but I have broad interests, so some other topics are sure to turn up from time to time<sup>2<\/sup>. The internet is full of talented people, and I hope you enjoy their work as much as I have.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Flies (Diptera)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icd8.info\/\" target=\"_blank\">8th International Congress of Dipterology<\/a> is coming up in a few years, so be sure to start saving your pennies for the trip to Potsdam, Germany!<\/p>\n<p>I prefer studying flies (dead or alive), but if that&#8217;s not your thing, check out these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petapixel.com\/2012\/05\/08\/creative-macro-photographs-of-a-fun-loving-fly\/\" target=\"_blank\">creative photos of dead house flies and blow flies having the times of their (already finished) lives<\/a>. Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ukaaa\/sets\/72157600327168850\/with\/468466752\/\" target=\"_blank\">full collection by photographer\u00a0Nicholas\u00a0Hendrickx<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/abugblog.blogspot.co.uk\/2012\/05\/footballer-hoverfly.html\" target=\"_blank\">BugBlog has a nice series of photos of\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/abugblog.blogspot.co.uk\/2012\/05\/footballer-hoverfly.html\" target=\"_blank\">Helophilus pendulus<\/a><\/em>, commonly called the Footballer Hoverfly in the UK. Why call it that, you might ask? Apparently the striped patterns on the thorax reminded someone of a soccer jersey.<\/p>\n<p>The Dragonfly Lady shows off <a href=\"http:\/\/thedragonflywoman.com\/2012\/05\/09\/hilltopping\/\" target=\"_blank\">a nice hilltopping site in Arizona<\/a>. Plenty of fly talk in the comments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Beetles (Coleoptera)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Edmonton Journal has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edmontonjournal.com\/news\/Going+eyed+beetles\/6575693\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">great biography of Dr. George Ball<\/a>, a beetle taxonomist at the University of Alberta who has impacted the careers of dozens of top entomologists across North America.<\/p>\n<p>This short film is both beautiful and bizarre all at once. <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/41756240\" target=\"_blank\">A stop-motion portrayal of the life of a beetle taxonomist who makes the discovery of a lifetime<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Emerald Ash Borer (<em>Agrilus planipennis<\/em>)\u00a0has now been found in most major urban centres across Ontario, and has recently turned up in Quebec. <a href=\"http:\/\/arthropodecology.com\/2012\/05\/07\/is-the-emerald-ash-borer-in-montreal-a-real-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Buddle discusses the affect that EAB will have on Montreal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While not EAB, <em>Chrysobothris vivida<\/em>\u00a0looks\u00a0quite similar on first glance. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10150781049382273&amp;set=a.10150335073072273.343514.22202087272&amp;type=1&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\">The Field Museum shows off the holotype and label data<\/a>, helping to explain the role that natural history collections play in day to day science.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of natural history collections, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/natureplus\/blogs\/beetles\/2012\/05\/08\/the-best-day-in-my-week-a-meaningful-evasion-from-selling-croissants\" target=\"_blank\">volunteer at the Natural History Museum in London, England shares why she loves helping out with the beetle collection<\/a> in her spare time.<\/p>\n<p>Check out this <a href=\"http:\/\/beetlesinthebush.wordpress.com\/2012\/05\/07\/desmiphora-hirticollis-crypsis-or-mimicry\/\" target=\"_blank\">awesome longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae) Ted McRae of Beetles in the Bush<\/a> came across while working in Argentina recently. While you&#8217;re there, share your ideas on the purpose of the strange tufts of hair!<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Ants, Bees, and Wasps (Hymenoptera)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yourwildlife.org\/2012\/05\/ants-those-ubiquitous-little-creatures-that-seem-to-know-exactly-where-you-set-up-your-picnic-blanket\/\" target=\"_blank\">School of Ants is gearing up for another summer of discovery<\/a> by sampling the ants around our houses and picnic areas.<\/p>\n<p>Ants are to ________ as clown fish are to anemones. Think you know the answer? Better check <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/notrocketscience\/2012\/05\/09\/meat-eating-plant-digests-insects-using-ants\/\" target=\"_blank\">Not Exactly Rocket Science (NERS) by Ed Yong for an excellent tale of commensalism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It may not be 1984, but <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/observations\/2010\/05\/27\/tiny-radio-transmitters-track-flight-of-tropical-orchid-bees\/\" target=\"_blank\">Big Brother is watching what Orchid Bees are up to<\/a>\u00a0(but don&#8217;t worry, it&#8217;s for a good reason).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article.cfm?id=hive-and-seek-domestic-honeybees-keep-disappearing\" target=\"_blank\">Scientific American ran an interesting story about native bee populations in eastern North America<\/a>, and included an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/slideshow.cfm?id=hive-and-seek-domestic-honeybees-keep-disappearing\" target=\"_blank\">excellent slideshow of some beautiful bees<\/a> with it.<\/p>\n<p>Some of photos in that slideshow came out of the Packer Bee Lab at York University, as did a newly published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biology.ualberta.ca\/bsc\/ejournal\/ds_20\/ds_20.html\" target=\"_blank\">review and key to the <em>Dufourea<\/em>\u00a0bees (Halictidae) of Canada in the Canadian Journal of Arthropod Identification<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other Arthropods<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marine water striders (Gerridae) are making the news this week with the release of a new study finding that a massive raft of plastic pollution in the Pacific is harboring a growing population of these bugs. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/notrocketscience\/2012\/05\/08\/insects-that-skate-on-the-ocean-benefit-from-plastic-junk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ed Yong is excellent again on his NERS blog<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/rsbl.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/early\/2012\/04\/26\/rsbl.2012.0298.full\" target=\"_blank\">paper is Open Access if you&#8217;d like to take a look yourself<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These plastic-loving water striders aren&#8217;t the only insects that have taken to the open ocean, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.insectmuseum.org\/?p=4310\" target=\"_blank\">North Carolina State University Insect Collection has a few more examples to share<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Caterpillars come in a wide variety of colours, shapes and forms, but these translucent, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/observations\/2012\/05\/09\/the-biology-of-the-translucent-jewel-caterpillar-the-nudibranch-of-the-forest\/\" target=\"_blank\">jelly Jewel Caterpillars are some of the most beautiful<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>I saw Avengers this week, and it was really, really good. Prior to the movie, there was a trailer for the upcoming Spiderman reboot, promising plenty of web-slinging action. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microvoyages.net\/2012\/05\/scytodidae-spitting-spiders.html\" target=\"_blank\">Before the movie comes out this summer, meet the backyard spider that may have served as inspiration for Peter Parker&#8217;s gadgets.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Taxonomy, Biodiversity, Academia, Science Communication\/Photography<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although written by a marine ecologist and discussing a paper about plant taxonomists, this post on the Sea Monster Blog is one of the most best stories about <a href=\"http:\/\/theseamonster.net\/2012\/05\/twilight-of-the-giants-in-taxonomy\/\" target=\"_blank\">the role of taxonomy and the decrease in taxonomists being hired and funded<\/a>. A must read for anyone who depends on biology in their day-to-day lives (that means you).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.insectmuseum.org\/?p=4305\" target=\"_blank\">NCSU group shares an entertaining story and asks you to decide whether it&#8217;s fact or fiction<\/a>. What do you think?<\/p>\n<p>The Tepuis of Brazil are way up on the list of places I want to explore and collect one day. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/05\/08\/science\/its-not-so-lonely-at-the-top-tepui-ecosystems-thrive-up-high.html?_r=2\" target=\"_blank\">This excellent New York Times article by Carl Zimmer makes me want to go even more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A new project was launched this week which<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mappinglife.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"> hopes to provide interactive range maps for all the worlds flora &amp; fauna<\/a>! <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/map-of-life-goes-live-1.10621\" target=\"_blank\">Nature has a nice feature explaining some of the goals and obstacles<\/a> the project faces in the early phases. Right now they only have terrestrial vertebrates and North American freshwater fish mapped, but the interface is excellent and has a lot of potential! Now to get some insects into the project&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Most research papers only discuss results and experiments that worked. <a href=\"http:\/\/canadianfieldnaturalist.blogspot.ca\/2012\/05\/null-results-are-useful-results-frog.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Canadian Field Naturalists Blog discusses the importance of publishing projects which didn&#8217;t work as expected<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Just because it&#8217;s summer vacation for undergraduate university students, doesn&#8217;t mean their professors get a break too. <a href=\"http:\/\/arthropodecology.com\/2012\/05\/10\/professors-take-the-summer-off\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Buddle outlines some of his labs plans for the summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To get a job in academia, your peers (and more importantly, your hiring committees) need to know you and your work. But is all self-promotion viewed equally? Excellent discussion on the <a href=\"http:\/\/scientopia.org\/blogs\/scicurious\/2012\/05\/09\/experimental-biology-blogging-self-promotion-and-self-promotion\/\" target=\"_blank\">evolving role of social media and blogging to the world of academia by Scicurious<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Photography &amp; Other Fun Stuff<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever wondered what it&#8217;d be like to be <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reuters.com\/photographers-blog\/2012\/05\/05\/into-the-night-covert-travel-with-president-obama\/\" target=\"_blank\">a press photographer tasked with covering President Obama<\/a>? This account by a Reuters photographer shows just how stressful the assignment can be.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know who started it, but the #InsectSongs suggested by Twitter users this week was an afternoon of hilarity.
