{"id":1863,"date":"2012-01-13T17:31:34","date_gmt":"2012-01-13T22:31:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/?p=1863"},"modified":"2012-01-13T17:31:34","modified_gmt":"2012-01-13T22:31:34","slug":"irreplaceable-fly-described-from-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/13\/irreplaceable-fly-described-from-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Irreplaceable fly described from Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montana.edu\/cpa\/news\/nwview.php?article=10665\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Redford may have a beetle<\/a>, but musical sensation Beyonc\u00e9 is fly!<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s right, Ms. Sasha Fierce has been bestowed with the taxonomic honour of patronymy by Australian dipterists <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csiro.au\/Organisation-Structure\/Divisions\/Ecosystem-Sciences\/BryanLessard.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Bryan Lessard<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csiro.au\/en\/Organisation-Structure\/Divisions\/Ecosystem-Sciences\/DavidYeates.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">David Yeates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Beyonce-fly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1864 aligncenter\" title=\"Beyonce fly Scaptia beyonceae\" src=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Beyonce-fly.jpg\" alt=\"Beyonce fly Scaptia beyonceae\" width=\"550\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Beyonce-fly.jpg 550w, http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Beyonce-fly-500x475.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.biodiversityinfocus.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Beyonce-fly-300x285.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bryan was bedazzled by the golden rumped females of the newly described\u00a0<em>Scaptia beyonceae<\/em>, a horse fly in the family Tabanidae,\u00a0and decided to forever immortalize\u00a0Beyonc\u00e9&#8217;s Bootylicious bottom. The species may have been a child of destiny, as the type specimen was collected in northern Australia shortly after Beyonc\u00e9&#8217;s birth, and has only been collected twice since.\u00a0Nobody knows how this fly species would appear if it were a boy, as all known specimens are female.<\/p>\n<p>I tried reaching Taylor Swift to learn when her own fly would be coming out, but was interrupted by Kanye West who apparently thinks this is one of the best flies of all time.\u00a0No word yet when junior synonym <em>Scaptia blueivyii<\/em>\u00a0will be described, but I&#8217;ll keep you updated!<\/p>\n<p>(All kidding aside, Bryan is a cool guy who I met at ESA this past fall.
