I’m catching up on your posts and love this one – mainly because it is basically recounting my experience in Reno last year. Apparently we were at many of the same talks, but I had no idea who you were at the time. I was at Ainsley’s talk and the wood-boring beetle ID talk (Gino is my past lab mate). I was also at the curmudgeon talk that you mention. I felt the exact same way that you did with lots of red flags going up at the beginning and then gearing up for a roller coaster of outdated ideas. I’m just glad that he’s definitely in the minority opinion!

I’m sad to hear about the curmugeonly coleopterist… In my experience it’s impossible to grow and/or learn in a staunch, isolated environment where all external input is rendered moot. If only he could be as forward thinking as us dipterist…
