Hi Morgan! I'm catching up on your posts and love this one - mainly because it is basically recounting my experience in Reno last year. Apparently we were at many of the same talks, but I had no idea who you were at the time. I was at Ainsley's talk and the wood-boring beetle ID talk (Gino is my past lab mate). I was also at the curmudgeon talk that you mention. I felt the exact same way that you did with lots of red flags going up at the beginning and then gearing up for a roller coaster of outdated ideas. I'm just glad that he's definitely in the minority opinion!

Thanks Matt. Phil is certainly as enthusiastic as ever, and the Cerceris project is really building up steam and attracting some great attention. I know that this coleopterist is in the vast minority with respect to attitudes about taxonomy, but it still got me riled up!

It's great to read this summary of your trip to Reno! I'm glad to hear that Phil is still going strong with Cerceris!
I'm sad to hear about the curmugeonly coleopterist... In my experience it's impossible to grow and/or learn in a staunch, isolated environment where all external input is rendered moot. If only he could be as forward thinking as us dipterist... :)
JK about the last statement; all of us entomologists have common ground, and we get nowhere by exiling the public.
